Artist's Comments

Early stages of something I want to do:
What is the definition of perfect? How much has to be sliced away and sacrificed before what's left is considered good? Standards of beauty? Acceptable versus unacceptable? Are things born wrong?

God, I sound like I think I'm an artist or something. *3:00 AM*

duuuuuuhhh.... I thought I had some awesome-cool comment to make on this, but soon as I moved to do it, the thought disappeared... it's must be early still... will comment later. (nifty image, by the way)

Ask me about a character portrait comission!

If beauty is perfection, then there is no such thing..

Each person's idea of beauty is different.. If the average woman was 5'9-6'2, weighed around 110, and had blonde hair, flawless skin, and blue eyes...
then what would we consider beautiful?

Amen, sistah. What inspired this was how people make offhand comments--without even thinking about it because they're so conditioned by the media--such as, "wow, that's a nose," or "she should lose a few pounds before she wears that dress again," And so on. It infuriates me like nothing else. Glad you stand by me and against the cult of so-called "perfection."

this is great  I love the idea behind it, but one question... did you find the leaf that way? Because that's not ugly, but unusual o.O

You mean with the center cut out? Or shaped the way it originally was? It was a leaf from some random weed in my yard, and I cut the center out with an x-acto knife.
To be PERFECTLY clear about this image: I am militantly against so-called "standards of beauty." I'm not trying to say that I wish myself or anything else to fit what is ridiculously idealized. The idea of a "better" leaf being carved out of one that had grown naturally, actually maiming it, is supposed to seem sad and wrong. I never thought the leaf was ugly to begin with. (And I felt like a fiend, picking it and slicing it up to do this. See [link] , same concept.)

I understood your message of the pic, that's what I liked so much about it :) I just wondered whether you found the leaf you cut the other out in that shape, because it really looks unusual to me o.O mabe it's just normal and I don't look close enough.

It's not so much standing by you, as it is the fact that I don't understand most's reasoning of "perfection"..

My grandmother has a tendancy to made snide comments aboutthe appearances of other students at my school.. But half the time, I just..don't understand where she's coming from.
Sure, she thinks this girl over there is beautiful, and I agree..
But so is this girl, over here, to me, that she commented against..

It's odd, I guess, to see things that way, but I've really never been able to understand society's views.

I hear ya.

Perfection is nothingness. The wholeness of the void, "things" are inherently imperfect, because they are only peices of a whole (atleast taking the current theories on the nature of the universe into consideration ;p). And ofcourse we all know beauty is simply a subjective perception of things. Both nothing and everything are perfect, it just depends on who is looking. 8D But I do understand the sentiment, idealism aside. Every culture has a different standard of beauty. I hear them try to explain it away as a natural process to find the best mate, the healthiest foods, etc. But by todays standards, that's far from true. Everyone's gone anorexic and food looks pretty but it's full of unhealthy crap. No one really has any idea what the hell is good for them anymore :P The meaning of life is marketed as "being better than other people", therefore we need to make up some standard for everyone to live up to. Because if no one is wrong or ugly, no one can be right or beautiful. And then people might not like getting stepped all over because they actually have a sense of self-worth. God forbid D:
